Gordon Brown is like an arsonist posing as a firefighter - Telegraph
"The Sunday Telegraph's admirable economics columnist, Liam Halligan, has for months been hammering the point that what is most needed is transparency and an end to uncertainty about the scale of toxic debt in banks' balance sheets. Recapitalisation, though necessary, has not removed the uncertainty. For this reason banks are reluctant to lend to each other, let alone businesses. The Prime Minister has expressed his frustration about this failure to get all the bad news into the open. His remarks hardly inspired confidence. After all, if he doesn't know, who does?"

Week End Diversion - Banco de Gaia - Last Train to Lhasa
Peaceful and ambiant. From my BestOf
allmusic ((( Last Train to Lhasa > Overview ))): "Review by John Bush
This double-disc concept album concerns the commercial invasion of Tibet by Chinese merchants hoping to overrun the peaceful country. Despite some watered-down beats, Toby Marks weaves Eastern-rhythms and futuristic synth quite well over both uptempo and ambient tracks."

U.N. Acquires Nuclear Weapon | The Onion - America's Finest News Source
Perhaps this will help reduce poverty after all!
"Despite outspoken concerns from many nations, including North Korea, Iran, and Serbia, Secretary-General Ban has assured the international community that the U.N.'s nuclear arsenal will only be used for deterrent purposes. Chief among these is deterring other countries from thinking they can sign a chemical weapons ban and then act like the whole thing never happened, and coming to the U.N. only when it's convenient or profitable for them to do so.
'I will say this as clearly as I can, so you all can hear me,' said Ban, his finger hovering inches away from the small red button on his podium. 'Either attend the next Follow-up International Conference on Financing for Development to Review the Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus, or prepare to suffer the consequences.'"

The Growing Foreclosure Crisis
"One oft-repeated assertion no longer holds true. Those in trouble are not, primarily, lower-income borrowers. The foreclosure crisis has become a wave, afflicting neighborhoods of every stripe -- but particularly communities created by the boom itself."

U.S. Debt Set to Soar in This Year - washingtonpost.com
"But about 40 percent of the debt held by private investors will mature in a year or less, according to Treasury officials. When those loans come due, the Treasury will have to borrow more money to repay them, even as it launches perhaps the most aggressive expansion of U.S. debt in modern history."

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Beautiful love story, backward
Ann Hornaday Movie Review: 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' - washingtonpost.com:
"That tagline, by the way, is 'You never know what's comin' for ya,' a folksy admonition that, by accident or design, is sure to remind viewers of the 'life is a box of chocolates' riff from 'Forrest Gump.' Both films, as it happens, were written by Eric Roth, and at its weakest 'Benjamin Button' hews too closely to Gumpian schmaltz and easy sentiment.
Like the earlier film, this one centers on a Candide-like naif whose travels through the world bring him in contact with all manner of colorful characters, who collectively teach him the important lessons in life."
